  5. BJChrome works on any Atari ST, with a Canon BubbleJet BJ-10
  6. family printer, fitted with the Colour Kit.
  7.  
  8. BJChrome prints 16-colour picture files in DEGAS (normal or
  9. compressed) and NEO formats.  It offers a choice of size and
  10. position on the page, with accuracy to 0.0028in (0.07mm).  Page
  11. layout can be either Portrait (upright) or Landscape (sideways). 
  12. The whole image, or just a section of it, can be printed at Draft,
  13. Normal, or Best quality.  Colour-correction can be applied to
  14. compensate for the differences between screen and paper colours.

  17. What you need

  20. *   Any Atari ST computer (512K RAM upwards, colour or mono).
  21.  
  22. *   Canon BubbleJet printer (BJ-10, BJ-10e, BJ-10ex, BJ-20, or 
  23.     other compatible printer).
  24.  
  25. *   Canon automatic sheet feeder for the printer (Model ASF-6411 
  26.     or equivalent).
  27.  
  28. *   Colour kit (cyan, magenta and yellow ink cartridges) to fit 
  29.     the printer.
  30.  
  31. BJChrome runs in High resolution (on an Atari mono monitor) or
  32. Medium or Low resolution (on a colour monitor or TV).  To make use
  33. of all the features, please use either High or Low resolution.

  43. The file CONVERT.BIN converts colour pics to mono so that they can
  44. be viewed on an Atari mono monitor.  All files are needed for the
  45. program to run (this is to prevent distribution of incomplete or
  46. modified copies, and does not apply to the registered version).

  49. Shareware
  50. =========
  51. BJChrome is SHAREWARE.  It is NOT FREE.
  52.  
  53. However, you are welcome to test and evaluate BJChrome v1 free of
  54. charge.  This version can also be freely distributed, subject to
  55. the normal shareware distribution practices.

  57. If you find BJChrome a valuable addition to your collection of

  80. Colour Kit
  81. ==========
  82.  
  83. The Colour Kit converts any BubbleJet printer into a full colour
  84. printer, creating high quality output in spot or full colour!
  85.  
  86. The Colour Kit consists of ink cartridge refills in Yellow, Cyan
  87. (blue), and Magenta (red), with which you can refill your empty
  88. black ink cartridges.  Cleaning solvent, to remove all traces of
  89. black ink from the empties, is included.
  90.  
  91. To print in full colour, you simply use BJChrome, change the ink
  92. cartridge when prompted, and re-insert the paper.  Yellow, Cyan
  93. (blue), Magenta (red), and Black are printed (in that order) on 
  94. separate passes through the printer.

  96. BJChrome's Black ink pass ensures that black and other dark areas in
  97. your picture will be printed in a more solid, monochromatic black
  98. than is possible with three-colour printers (which create black by
  99. combining Cyan, Magenta and Yellow inks).

  101. We use and recommend the Inkmun Colour Kit, distributed in the UK
  102. by System Insight.  However, other brands of Colour Kit may also

  127. These instructions are deliberately brief.  A full manual, with
  128. explanations of all the features and options, and hints and tips,
  129. is supplied to registered users.

  135. Click to select a file to load - default type is DEGAS.  Filename
  136. is displayed.

  139. Click to adjust size of printout.  Size is displayed.

  142. Click to adjust page layout.  Position of pic (X and Y coordinates
  143. of top left corner) is displayed.

  146. Click to select a rectangular part of the picture to print (not
  147. available in medium res).

  163. Drag the shaded rectangle around the white box, or use the X/Y
  164. up/down buttons.

  167. Drag the white square at the bottom right corner of the shaded
  168. rectangle, or use the W/H up/down buttons.

  170. When using the X/Y/W/H up/down buttons, hold the Alternate key for
  171. Coarse adjustment, or the Control key for Fine adjustment.

  174. Click to select Portrait (upright) or Landscape (horizontal) page
  175. layout.  Picture size is defaulted.

  178. Click to select or de-select Aspect Ratio Lock (picture stays 'in
  179. pro').  Default:  selected (unless the selected Crop makes this
  180. impossible).

  186. Mark one corner of your chosen rectangle with the cross-hairs, and
  187. click the mouse.  Adjust the box so that it encloses your chosen
  188. rectangle, and click again.

  190. This feature works in High and Low resolution, but not Medium.

  193. Quality Buttons
  194. ===============
  195. The resolution (number of dots per inch) of the printed picture
  196. depends on the setting of these buttons.  
  197.  
  198. Draft:  180 x 180 dpi
  199. Normal: 360H x 180V dpi
  200. Best:   360 x 360 dpi

  203. Colour Menu
  204. ===========
  205.  
  206. Click one of the 16 coloured (or patterned) boxes to select a
  207. colour.  Its value in the ST palette (RGB 0 to 15) and in the Canon
  208. palette (RGB 0 to 255) are displayed.
  209.  
  210. The Canon colour value is affected by whether Gamma Compensation
  211. is selected, and the value of Gamma (0 to 9.9).  It can also be 
  212. Nudged by up to 99 RGB levels up or down.  A Cast of up to 99 RGB 
  213. levels up or down can be applied to the whole palette of 16 colours. 
  214.  
  215. The Grey Bal button activates contrast enhancement on the Black ink
  216. pass, giving brighter highlights, darker shadows, and less muddy
  217. mid-tones.  This should normally be selected.
  218.

  220. View Screen
  221. ===========

  223. The picture, with the selected rectangle (if any) outlined, is
  224. displayed.  Moving the mouse around will display its current co-
  225. ordinates and the colour index of the pixel it is over.
  226.  
  227. This feature works in High and Low resolution, but not Medium.

  230. Options Menu
  231. ============
  232.  
  233. Printer
  234. =======
  235. Select according to the emulation chosen (using the DIP switches)
  236. on the printer.  The default is Mode 1.
  237.  
  238. On the BJ-10e, Mode 1 is selected when DIP switch 10 is OFF.
  239. In this mode the printer is compatible with software designed 
  240. for use with the IBM ProPrinter X24.  
  241.  
  242. Mode 2 is selected when DIP switch 10 is ON.
  243.  
  244. The graphics resolution capability is the same in both modes.
  245. Choose whichever mode is set on your BubbleJet for your other
  246. software.
  247.  
  248. However, some early model BubbleJets may not support the graphics
  249. commands used in Mode 2.  If yours is one of these, and you find 
  250. that Mode 2 doesn't work, then just make sure you select Mode 1
  251. both on the printer and in the program.

  290. Activates a test routine to check that the ink cartridge is
  291. performing satisfactorily.  When you are satisfied, just press
  292. the printer's on/off switch to turn the printer off momentarily.

  295. Printing
  296. ========
  297.  
  298. Static display shows the type of printer selected, the name of the
  299. file being printed, the quality, the current copy number, and the
  300. current colour pass.
  301.  
  302. Dynamic display shows the scan row currently being processed, how
  303. much longer the current pass will take, and a visual impression of
  304. this information, updated every 24 (Draft/Normal) or 48 (Best) rows.
  305.  
  306. To stop printing, press the ST's UNDO key.  Printing will stop after
  307. the current 'slice' (24 or 48 rows) of data has been processed.

  310. Tips
  311. ====
  312. The use of the automatic sheet feeder is crucial to successful
  313. colour printing.  It is the only way to ensure consistent
  314. registration of the paper from one ink pass to the next.
  315.  
  316. After changing cartridges, run the cartridge cleaning routine as
  317. recommended in the printer manual.  To do so, ensure that the
  318. printer is online, and press FWD ADJ and REV ADJ simultaneously.
