BJChrome v1
(Unregistered Version)
BJChrome works on any Atari ST, with a Canon BubbleJet BJ-10
family printer, fitted with the Colour Kit.
BJChrome prints 16-colour picture files in DEGAS (normal or
compressed) and NEO formats. It offers a choice of size and
position on the page, with accuracy to 0.0028in (0.07mm). Page
layout can be either Portrait (upright) or Landscape (sideways).
The whole image, or just a section of it, can be printed at Draft,
Normal, or Best quality. Colour-correction can be applied to
compensate for the differences between screen and paper colours.
What you need
=============
* Any Atari ST computer (512K RAM upwards, colour or mono).
* Canon BubbleJet printer (BJ-10, BJ-10e, BJ-10ex, BJ-20, or
other compatible printer).
* Canon automatic sheet feeder for the printer (Model ASF-6411
or equivalent).
* Colour kit (cyan, magenta and yellow ink cartridges) to fit
the printer.
BJChrome runs in High resolution (on an Atari mono monitor) or
Medium or Low resolution (on a colour monitor or TV). To make use
of all the features, please use either High or Low resolution.
What you get
============
* BJCHROME.PRG - the program
* CONVERT.BIN - colour picture conversion module
* BJCHROME.TXT - the manual (this file)
The file CONVERT.BIN converts colour pics to mono so that they can
be viewed on an Atari mono monitor. All files are needed for the
program to run (this is to prevent distribution of incomplete or
modified copies, and does not apply to the registered version).
Shareware
=========
BJChrome is SHAREWARE. It is NOT FREE.
However, you are welcome to test and evaluate BJChrome v1 free of
charge. This version can also be freely distributed, subject to
the normal shareware distribution practices.
If you find BJChrome a valuable addition to your collection of
software then please send £5.00 to Rufus Developments. You will
then be registered as a user, and will receive the following
additional benefits:
(1) Registered version of the program, without the 'shareware
nags' that are built into this version.
(2) Printed fully illustrated manual, giving full instructions,
explanation of all features and options, and hints and tips.
(3) Technical support (if needed) and updates (as available) of
BJChrome. Support and updates are ONLY available to registered
users.
(4) Your money back! We are currently working on a complete
revision of BJChrome, an entirely new program, with full GEM event
driven user interface, able to print file types including Tiny,
GEM .IMG, Spectrum 512, and GIF. As a registered user of BJChrome
you will receive a £5.00 discount on the purchase price of its
successor! What a deal.
Colour Kit
==========
The Colour Kit converts any BubbleJet printer into a full colour
printer, creating high quality output in spot or full colour!
The Colour Kit consists of ink cartridge refills in Yellow, Cyan
(blue), and Magenta (red), with which you can refill your empty
black ink cartridges. Cleaning solvent, to remove all traces of
black ink from the empties, is included.
To print in full colour, you simply use BJChrome, change the ink
cartridge when prompted, and re-insert the paper. Yellow, Cyan
(blue), Magenta (red), and Black are printed (in that order) on
separate passes through the printer.
BJChrome's Black ink pass ensures that black and other dark areas in
your picture will be printed in a more solid, monochromatic black
than is possible with three-colour printers (which create black by
combining Cyan, Magenta and Yellow inks).
We use and recommend the Inkmun Colour Kit, distributed in the UK
by System Insight. However, other brands of Colour Kit may also
be available. For further information, please contact your local
computer dealer, or:

Crop Screen
===========
Mark one corner of your chosen rectangle with the cross-hairs, and
click the mouse. Adjust the box so that it encloses your chosen
rectangle, and click again.
This feature works in High and Low resolution, but not Medium.
Quality Buttons
===============
The resolution (number of dots per inch) of the printed picture
depends on the setting of these buttons.
Draft: 180 x 180 dpi
Normal: 360H x 180V dpi
Best: 360 x 360 dpi
Colour Menu
===========
Click one of the 16 coloured (or patterned) boxes to select a
colour. Its value in the ST palette (RGB 0 to 15) and in the Canon
palette (RGB 0 to 255) are displayed.
The Canon colour value is affected by whether Gamma Compensation
is selected, and the value of Gamma (0 to 9.9). It can also be
Nudged by up to 99 RGB levels up or down. A Cast of up to 99 RGB
levels up or down can be applied to the whole palette of 16 colours.
The Grey Bal button activates contrast enhancement on the Black ink
pass, giving brighter highlights, darker shadows, and less muddy
mid-tones. This should normally be selected.
View Screen
===========
The picture, with the selected rectangle (if any) outlined, is
displayed. Moving the mouse around will display its current co-
ordinates and the colour index of the pixel it is over.
This feature works in High and Low resolution, but not Medium.
Options Menu
============
Printer
=======
Select according to the emulation chosen (using the DIP switches)
on the printer. The default is Mode 1.
On the BJ-10e, Mode 1 is selected when DIP switch 10 is OFF.
In this mode the printer is compatible with software designed
for use with the IBM ProPrinter X24.
Mode 2 is selected when DIP switch 10 is ON.
The graphics resolution capability is the same in both modes.
Choose whichever mode is set on your BubbleJet for your other
software.
However, some early model BubbleJets may not support the graphics
commands used in Mode 2. If yours is one of these, and you find
that Mode 2 doesn't work, then just make sure you select Mode 1
both on the printer and in the program.

Printing
========

file being printed, the quality, the current copy number, and the
current colour pass.
Dynamic display shows the scan row currently being processed, how
much longer the current pass will take, and a visual impression of
this information, updated every 24 (Draft/Normal) or 48 (Best) rows.
To stop printing, press the ST's UNDO key. Printing will stop after
the current 'slice' (24 or 48 rows) of data has been processed.
Tips
====
The use of the automatic sheet feeder is crucial to successful
colour printing. It is the only way to ensure consistent
registration of the paper from one ink pass to the next.
After changing cartridges, run the cartridge cleaning routine as
recommended in the printer manual. To do so, ensure that the
printer is online, and press FWD ADJ and REV ADJ simultaneously.
